Primary Residential Parent

In Tennessee, our parenting plans have a blank to list one of the parents as “Primary Residential Parent,” or “PRP.” What does that mean? It depends!

What it doesn’t mean is that the PRP gets to make decisions. The decisions must be made in accordance with the decision making section of your parenting plan. If it says “joint,” then both parents have equal voices in decisions.

What it can mean is that the PRP’s home address will be the one that is used for school zoning. But not always- if you have a 50/50 parenting schedule, you might be able to use either parent’s address. Check with your school system or your lawyer.
